“Discovery and Revelation” at American History

Are science and religion at war?

“Discovery and Revelation” exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History asks three big questions-

  • What is our place in the universe?
  • What do we owe each other?
  • What does it mean to be human?

Who in the American story has lived at this pivotal point?

In this intersection of religion and science, “people assume only conflict” says curator Peter Manseau. But it doesn’t have to be, as show by a large photo illustrating scientists studying brain activity during meditation.

Objects on view include-

  • Jefferson’s Bible
  • Astronomy models
  • Henrietta Lacks portrait
  • Apollo 8 photo and audio
  • Mastodon drawings
  • Benjamin Franklin’s lightning rod
  • Letter written by Galileo
  • 1720s pamphlets arguing for and against vaccination

The three touchstones of the exhibition

See these priceless objects and the questions they raise on the second floor at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Open Friday-Tuesday 10-5:30.
