New DC Exhibits for Families on Spring Break 2024

Is spring break coming up for your family, leaving you wondering what to see in Washington, DC, with the kids? Aren’t sure if there’s anything new worth seeing?

Here are three of our favorite new things to check out in DC:

Building Stories

National Building Museum- “Building Stories”

Newly opened in January, this ambitious exhibit looks at great buildings through the lens of children’s literature. It’s an interactive exhibit designed for children and their parents to enjoy.

The rest of the museum is great too. It delights the kid in all of us through exhibits like “Brick City” or their immersive summer installations. It also has an outstanding museum store.

Bond in Motion

Spy Museum

This paid experience puts you in the shoes of spies both real and fiction. You’re given a secret identity when you start the museum, letting you explore your spy’s story as you go.

“Bond in Motion” just opened this month, showcasing iconic vehicles from the movie series. While it is an additional fee, it’s worth it for huge James Bond fans, letting you see the BMWs, Jaguars, and Aston Martins used across the years.

Air and Space

Air and Space Museum

Eighteen months ago, the Air and Space Museum reopened with eight updated exhibits. If you haven’t gone yet, it’s well worth the visit. It’s the most popular family museum on the Mall for a reason.

Not only does it bring air and space stories to life, there’s plenty to keep young kids entertained. There’s even a special mother’s room with kids’ toys for nursing moms.

This free option requires reservations for tickets. Get them on their website.

None of those strike your fancy? Here are three more recently opened exhibits.

  • Star Power: Photographs from Hollywood’s Golden Age by George Hurrell. Perfect for old Hollywood fans. When you get home, turn on a classic movie from the 1930s like The Wizard of Oz or The Adventures of Robin Hood.
  • The Future of Orchids: Conservation and Collaboration. The Smithsonian’s annual orchid exhibit is extra colorful this year. Kids will enjoy viewing or sketching the beautiful blooms and then playing in the courtyard water feature.
  • Striking Objects: Contemporary Japanese Metalwork. Explore Japanese metalworking at the National Museum of Asian Art. Try sketching them or discussing the techniques used in their making.

We hope these ideas help you navigate your spring break with the family this year. There are many wonderful things to see in DC this time of year, from new exhibits to the cherry blossoms, which should hit peak bloom in late March.
