In DC for the Inauguration? 5 Exhibits You Must See

Are you and your family coming to DC for the inauguration? Don’t forget to visit the Smithsonian while you’re in town.

If you’re not sure where to go, here are five thematically appropriate must-see exhibits for the inauguration.

Due to the inauguration, check each museum’s website for hours and closings before you visit.

1) America’s Presidents- The National Portrait Gallery

Saints and scoundrels have served as presidents. Walk through portraits of all 45 and see the sweep of our presidential history in the only complete presidential portrait collection outside of the White House.

Rotunda at National Archives

2) Charters of Freedom- National Archives

The rotunda of the National Archives holds the three most important documents in American history- the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. The very things we say we believe and what the president swears before God and this nation to uphold.

First Ladies at American History

3) The First Ladies- American History Museum

The First Lady brings grace and beauty to the office of president. These iconic outfits from the beginning of many presidencies highlight the glamour associated with this role.

4) Museum and Education Center- Mount Vernon

A person’s home tells you more about them than their portrait or office. Visit George Washington’s home, then tour the museum to understand our founding father better.

Air and Space

5) Destination Moon- Air and Space Museum

This exhibit demonstrates John Kennedy’s vision of where we’re going and his challenge to get there. Watch clips of his speech laying out his aspiration to send man to the Moon while standing among the artifacts of those journeys he wouldn’t live to see.

These five must-see exhibits for the inauguration are wonderful ways to discuss the American presidency and democracy with your kids.
