Discovering Mount Vernon: A Free President’s Day Familiy Adventure

Step back in time with George and Martha Washington

Mount Vernon is more than a historical site; it’s where George and Martha Washington practiced the art of hospitality. Unlike a visit to a general’s tent or president’s office, coming here feels personal.

This Presidents Day, February 17th, entry is free, offering you and your children a unique chance to walk where history was made.

Three of our favorites to see

  1. Don Francisco, the resident fifer. Don’s highly entertaining and interacts with visitors personally. Experience his performance on the Bowling Green at 1 pm and 2:30 pm. These demonstrations are a highlight for many visitors.
  2. Behind-the-scenes mansion tour. Get an exclusive look behind the walls of the mansion as it’s under reconstruction. See how George Washington expanded and remodeled these walls hundreds of years ago.
  3. The old guard drills. Experience the Continental Color Guard in action, wearing uniform designs approved by General Washington himself in 1782. And like General Washington, all these guards must be over 6′ fall.
