I thought diamonds were crystal clear. So what makes some colored?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It depends. The famous Hope Diamond&#8217;s rich blue coloring comes from an additional element in its chemical makeup called boron. But the Winston Red doesn&#8217;t contain any other elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how do you get additional color without adding anything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/blogs\/national-museum-of-natural-history\/2025\/04\/01\/how-do-diamonds-get-their-fancy-colors\/\">Smithsonian Magazine<\/a>, the answer is plastic deformation during gem formation. This alters the diamond structure, reflecting back the red light we see.
