It would still be another three years before man set foot on the moon, but people were already dreaming of the \u201cfinal frontier\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Many scientists, inventors, and creatives have cited <em>Star Trek<\/em> as an influence on their work. Among them are five astronauts you may or may not know were Trekkies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neil Armstrong (Gemini and Apollo)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Armstrong made an appearance at a 2004 convention celebrating James Doohan&#8217;s (Montgomery Scotty) retirement. She guest-starred in the <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em> episode \u201cSecond Chances\u201d in 1993. He&#8217;s stated that the original <em>Star Trek<\/em> show and films inspired him to pursue a NASA career. He even had a brief cameo in the <em>Star Trek: Enterprise<\/em> episode \u201cThese Are the Voyages\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mike Fincke (Shuttle and ISS)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mike Fincke appeared alongside Terry Virts in the episode \u201cThese Are the Voyages\u2026\u201d after they visited the set on vacation and were invited to appear in the final episode. The badge is now in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/object\/badge-star-trek-communicator-sally-ride%3Anasm_A20140238000\">Air and Space&#8217;s collection<\/a>.
