The cherry blossom blooms are drawing to a close for another year. But this is your last chance to see (some) of these trees, such as the beloved Stumpy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tidal Basin sea wall is crumbling and needs repairs. To do that, the Park Service must remove over a hundred trees from the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first two Japanese cherry trees were planted here in 1912. It would still be ten years before the building of the Lincoln Memorial and thirty-one years before the Jefferson. The Smithsonian only had five museums. Flying had been possible for less than ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s been 112 years since the Park Service put in those first trees, and the Tidal Basin infrastructure needs updating. Some of the trees have to go for that to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So come down this weekend to enjoy the final cherry blossoms, the weather, and the monumental views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it will all look different next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
