It’s been 4 years and 3 months since we last visited Mount Vernon.
We last went for free on Presidents Day.
The problem with free is that all the other freeloaders like us showing up. It clogs the place up. Full parking lots, long lines, and winter weather stole some of the fun from the visit.
So this year, we bought a membership. We hope to visit several times to get to know George Washington and Mount Vernon.
- Will the membership be worth it?
- How often will we go?
- What will we discover?
- How many homeschool field trips will we take?
- What will the Christmas decorations be like?
When we visited Tuesday we were delighted with the free parking, mansion tour without a wait, and a beautiful first day of summer weather.
Meeting Martha Washington was this visit’s highlight.
Martha Washington spoke extemporaneously for 45 minutes about:
- Her life stories
- Visitors frequent questions
- George Washington’s life
She was entertaining, engaging, and educational in ways no digital screen, pamphlet, museum wall text, or memorized script can do.
We’re already looking forward to going back. And you’ll be the first to hear what we continue to discover.
