1. “Seasons Greenings” at the United States Botanic Garden
The United States Botanic Garden has a yearly Christmas train display surrounded by buildings made entirely from plants. After you see that, take a quick tour through the rest of the interior gardens, ending with the Christmas tree in the East Gallery.

2. U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree
While at the Botanic Garden, take a stroll across the road to see the U. S. Capitol Christmas Tree. It’s hung with handmade ornaments from all over the country and comes from a different state every year. It’s a beautiful location on the Capitol lawn with views down the Mall to the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

3. National Christmas Tree
The National Christmas Tree sits in President’s Park right outside the White House. The tree is a hundred-year-old tradition from the days of President Coolidge. It’s surrounded by 58 smaller trees, one for each state and territory.

4. National Harbor
The National Harbor boasts many holiday activities, starting with nightly light shows on their 60-foot tree. They also have fireworks, Christmas shopping, and the 180-foot Capital Wheel. Bundle up the kids and enjoy an evening out together.

5. Downtown Holiday Market
The Downtown Holiday Market is on F Street, right outside the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum. Visit the museum and then stroll down the street to browse the 70+ vendors, buy food, and listen to music. Photo ops include life-sized nutcrackers and a “Joy” sign.

- The Portrait Gallery is open until 7 pm, later than other Smithsonian museums
