When the guns of WWI fell silent on November 11, 1918, these United States of America had been at war for just one year.
Some local soldiers didn’t return to victory parades. Only their names appeared, carved on the DC War Memorial.
John Francis Moriarty enlisted in the Navy. He was a DC boy who was only stationed on the east coast and wanted to join the war.
After finally getting a transfer, he was swept overboard as his ship crossed the Atlantic Ocean one night in 1918. John Francis Moriarty’s name is engraved on the District of Columbia War Memorial on the National Mall.
Today we remember those who served, living and dead.
