Vittore Carpaccio: The Master Storyteller of Renaissance Venice

You have one last chance to see this huge retrospective art show at the National Gallery of Art.

My first impression of this exhibition was surprise and delight at the vibrant, attention-grabbing colors. The series of paintings telling a complete story draw me in, my eye going from one scene to another.

Even his draft sketches are beautiful works in their own right, without the bold colors.

As you enter this exhibition, Carpaccio’s large Saint George and the Dragon c. 1504-1507 dominates the room.

St. George is portrayed interposed between the dragon and the princess at the moment his lance impales the dragon’s head. The dragon’s previous victims lie on the ground around him. This highlights the bravery of St. George to intervene and shows him as the great victor.

Vittore Carpaccio is a beautiful example of vibrant Christian culture in a time of rebirth. This Renaissance artist’s exhibition is a must see in Washington DC.
