See Destination Moon Before the Smithsonian Shutdown Begins

Beginning this Sunday, the Smithsonian Museums are closing because they’re out of money due to the government shutdown.

One exhibit worth seeing before the doors close is Destination Moon.

Apollo 11 module

A decade-long story, told through several colorful galleries, leaves you longing for the glory days of NASA and the national priority of getting a man to the moon and back safely.

The large Apollo 11 command module is the star of the gallery. But many smaller artifacts and missions help tell the tale of the USA’s journey to the moon, such as:

  • The early Mercury and Gemini space missions that laid the groundwork for Apollo
  • The Omega Speedmaster watch worn by Neil Armstrong during the Apollo mission
  • The large-format Hasselblad camera used during Mercury missions to take pictures of the moon and Earth

Free entry passes are required. Some are available at the door if you forget to reserve them.

The National Air and Space Museum is open 10 am to 5:30 pm until Saturday, October 11th. After that, the museum will close to the public until the government shutdown is over.
