Fun Family Visit to Fort Washington

Stand on the point of land poking into the Potomac River. A stone and brick fort looms above you.

You instantly see what a map or written description of this abandoned fort could only try to explain.

Fort Washington’s location and design made it a key point of defense along the Potomac for years. It protected our nation’s capital until the invention of airplanes made it obsolete.

Even though it’s forgotten, it still has much to offer.

  • Free parking (and lots of it)
  • No entrance fee
  • Uncrowded
  • Beautiful views
  • Free fishing for kids under 16
  • Subterranean caverns to explore
  • Cannons to climb on

Run around, battling imaginary foes in the river below. Imprison unruly recruits in the gatehouse cell.

All while planes pass overhead, flying in and out of Reagan National Airport. Planes which made this 19th-century fort obsolete.
