Looking for a meaningful way to commemorate D-Day with your family this year?
Head to the U.S. Army Museum, a short 25-minute drive from the National Mall. This newer museum offers an engaging experience that brings the history of D-Day to life for kids and adults.

Step into the D-Day Gallery
The D-Day Gallery is a must-see for local families wanting to honor the bravery of our soldiers on June 6, 1944. On display are:
- A Higgins Boat that ferried soldiers ashore to Normandy
- The M4 Sherman tanks landed at all five D-Day Beaches- Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.
- A Landing Craft vehicle that took part in this invasion, which became the turning point of WWII.
These artifacts aren’t replicas but real vehicles that were on the ground at D-Day.

Pro Tip: Allow 2-3 hours for your visit. The Museum Cafe is excellent ( a phrase I never thought I’d say). There’s plenty to see, including a Hummer #001 for your family’s car-loving kids.
With spacious free parking and uncrowded museum galleries, it’s a top choice for what to see in Washington, DC.
The National Museum of the United States Army is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Visit their website to learn more.
