Celebrating Father’s Day at Mount Vernon (While Avoiding DC’s Parade Chaos)

This Father’s Day weekend, avoid the hassle of navigating Washington, DC’s downtown monumental core. Instead, take dad to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, the father of his country.

With road closures, restrictions, and a military parade planned for Saturday, June 14, why not stay out of the city and see other nearby sights?

Mount Vernon is a short drive into Virginia on the George Washington Parkway beside the Potomac River. The mansion is iconic, and the gardens are beautiful in early summer. Plus, the animals on this working farm are fun to watch. If it’s too wet or hot outside, the on-site museum offers plenty to explore.

Just down the road is George Washington’s Distillery and Grist Mill, which is included in your pass and offers weekend tours. You can also do whiskey tastings from the Mount Vernon estate at the mill or in the estate restaurant.

The open spaces and sweeping river views from Mount Vernon are a relief from the closures and restrictions of DC this weekend.
