Have you ever taken part in the county fair?
State Fairs: Growing American Craft, the newest exhibit at the Renwick Gallery, may inspire you or your kids to do so.

This massive exhibit fills the museum with over 240 handicrafts from 43 state fairs. Its goal is to showcase American handicrafts dating back to the mid-19th century through today.
There’s a little something for everyone here. Quilts, furniture, pottery, clothing, and even a literal mountain of preserves. And we can’t forget the iconic butter cow.

County and state fairs have been a part of American culture since 1841, when Syracuse, New York, held the first state fair (which still runs today). They’re opportunities for people to showcase their skills and earn prizes for everything from raising animals to growing crops to baking pies to sewing quilts.
Families with kids will especially enjoy this exhibit. You can explore the different handicrafts and look for items from your state. It might just inspire them to try a new skill that they can enter in your local county fair when fall rolls around.
On the way out, make sure to pick up one of the free souvenir postcards available at the information desk. Keep it to remember your visit, or send it to a family member in another state.

State Fairs: Growing American Craft reminds us of the traditional skills that have been passed down from father to son, mother to daughter, throughout American history. If we don’t want them to disappear entirely, we need to continue this convention with our children.
The exhibit is on view now at the Renwick Gallery through September 6th, 2026. Visit their website for more information and to plan your visit.
